July 21
From Mr. Wood
Eastside Family,
By now you have heard, I have accepted a new role as Chief Operations Officer for Bullitt County Public Schools.
I am honored to serve our district in a new leadership capacity, yet I can't help but be saddened at the notion of lost interaction with the Eastside learning community. I will miss the exceptional people I have met over the past eight years and will always treasure the many fond memories of the students, parents, family members, and staff. You have made my tenure as principal the most rewarding years of my career and I have developed relationships I will always cherish. The Eastside community has been my extended family and a place that I have grown to love so dearly. That love doesn’t fade or waiver with a newly appointed position. Eastside will forever be a special place to me.
I want to say thank you - from the bottom of my heart. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your principal. This learning adventure has truly been one of my greatest blessings. I am grateful that Eastside will remain a significant part of my life as I shift from principal mode to parent mode. I'll get to be an active and involved parent of my incoming Eastside student, a fan in the stands, and the biggest supporter and encourager of your next leader. I’m genuinely looking forward to that. Thankfully, this isn’t “goodbye,” rather “I’ll see you around.”
I know the greatness of Eastside will endure and this school will continue to excel. Eastside in great hands having the best of the profession in character and craft. The teachers, staff and students are the heartbeat of Eastside. They are the true core, and the reason for unrivaled success. I’ll be excited to watch the continued growth in years to come.
I extend my love and gratitude to you all! I look forward to seeing you at ball games and throughout our wonderful community. Eagle pride!
With sincere appreciation,
Troy D. Wood
Always an Eagle

Items ordered in this first ordering window have a projected arrival BEFORE the start of school.
The site is now open again and will remain open through August 10. This is the second ordering window. Items ordered from July 15 through August 10 will have a projected delivery date of September 1st.
Delivery dates are PROJECTED, as we cannot predict potential shipping and supply chain conflicts. There could be a chance that partial orders are ready for pick up; however, our desire is to have all items ready by the determined dates. Please understand that some scenarios could be out of our control.
Eastside apparel is not required, but our apparel sales and our annual mum sale are our only fundraisers for the year. Proceeds from both are used to support the many school-wide programs we offer at Eastside. The money goes back to our learning community. The clothing is durable. We have students currently wearing apparel from 8 years ago and often apparel is passed down from sibling to sibling. View our DRESS CODE.

SERVICE PROJECT
SERVICE is one of four Eastside virtues and we want to keep service as priority, even through the summer. Our summer service project supports Jonny's Wagon. Jonny's Wagon is an outreach of My Daily Armor Ministries (*MDA) that partners with communities to help end hunger in America. They help provide basic needs to the homeless and those living at or below the poverty line. The ministry currently conducts weekly community food drives to collect food to stock food pantries located around Louisville and surrounding areas. MDA and it's outreach ministries are all nonprofits and depend on donations by partners such as local area churches, community groups, local businesses, and willing individuals.
The Jr leadership team, which includes current Eastside students, has organized a 5K run to raise money for their program to build and place additional food pantries in areas that are lacking and are working with the Mt Washington Lion's Club to provide pantries for several locations. The 5K will take place in Mt Washington at the Sports Complex at the start of the annual Fall Festival.
We encourage our students to give of their OWN money rather than to ask the adults in the home to contribute. If students do not have their own funds, they can do chores to earn money for the donation. We give each student of goal of contributing at least $10. This is about giving with a servant's heart and without an expectation to receive anything in return. Our goal is to raise $4,000 as a school.

FBI Louisville Teen Academy
The 2022 Louisville FBI Teen Academy is open to students ages 13-18. The academy will be held at the FBI Louisville Field Office, June 7-10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Punctuality, professional behavior and appropriate dress will be required of all students attending this program. Our Teen Academy program allows students an opportunity to get a comprehensive look into today’s FBI. Students are provided with several presentations on topics including terrorism, cyber-crime, public corruption, polygraph exams, evidence response, SWAT, and the day-to-day operations of a typical FBI office. Students also learn from special agents, intelligence analysts, language specialists, and professional staff about investigative tactics that include gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and assisting with cases.
The program is not exclusive to students interested in criminal justice. Due to the vast diversity in our workforce, any student with an interest in the FBI, what we do and how a relationship with the FBI can help their school is encouraged to apply. All students will be evaluated based on their application (GPA, school activities and community involvement) and essay to determine which students will be offered a seat in the class. None of the above elements will be the sole basis of evaluation of an application and the application process should be taken seriously by all applicants. This application and supporting essay must be received by email or mail by May 1 for panel review. Hand delivered applications will not be accepted because of security policies. Incomplete and late applications will not be accepted.
The Teen Academy is not an overnight camp. Students will need to bring their own lunch. The FBI Louisville Field Office does not provide transportation to the Teen Academy. The address for the Teen Academy is FBI Louisville Field Office, 12401 Sycamore Station Place, Louisville, KY 40299. There is no cost to attend the Teen Academy. Each student selected to attend the academy will attend all four days at the Louisville Field Office.

Service Project - One More on the Way
Our next, and final service project of the school year is in May. During school on May 18th, we will be preparing 25,000 meals to send to Haiti, Somalia and Honduras. For this service project, we are asking our STUDENTS to raise the money for the meals. With a servant's heart and a giving mindset, we are asking students to go out and raise money to sponsor meals. Each meal costs us 27 cents. Students are encouraged to break the piggy banks, mow a yard, complete chores, and anything else to raise funds, EXCEPT ask an adult in the household for the donation. 25,000 meals will require just under $10.00 raised per student. Encourage your student to get a head start!
8th Grade Dance
The 8th grade dance is scheduled for Friday, May 13! The dance will be held at Church of the Crossroads from 6pm to 8pm. This dance is for 8th grade Eastside students only.

Peanut Allergies
Please make sure your students are practicing recommended school procedures when students in their peer group have known nut allergies. Classrooms with students having allergies have been given specific instructions not to bring nuts into the classrooms at any time. Nut free classrooms have signs outside the entrance reminding students not to take food containing nuts into the classroom. It is critical that students understand the potential life-threatening impact this could have on a peer with severe allergic reactions. Thank you for reinforcing these safety measures with your students.

Car Riders Help Us Out
We need your assistance in the car rider line. We have more car riders this year than in years past. The back up on highway 44 is not a good situation. We are trying to offset some of this by allowing car riders to exit early. We receive complaints often about the lengthy, and often slow going progress. Much of this can be avoided if our parents would follow the procedures we have in place. Please help us with the following if you desire the line to run more smoothly.
1) The doors to the school open at 7:40. That is when we have appropriate adult supervision. Please do not allow students to exit the vehicle before you see an administrator out front. We have been getting out early whenever possible, usually no later than 7:35. We do not want students congregating outside without supervision. Once you see an administrator, you may release.
2) Please PULL ALL THE WAY FORWARD. The closer you get to the white sign that reads "Lead Vehicle Begin Here," and the closer you get to the vehicle in front of you, the better we are. Pulling to the white sign (it's near the stop sign, by the way) allows for 17-20 vehicles to exit at one time. When you stop in front of the school to let your child out, we cut that in half. Please know that we have a few car riders with special circumstances who need to be dropped off at the front. This should be the only reason a car does not pull all the way forward. Be courteous and patient. For others who simply refuse to pull up because they don't want their student to walk the additional steps, handle accordingly : ).
Note: Pulling all the way forward is necessary regardless of the elements. Neither rain, snow, nor frigid weather are reasons to stop short. Umbrellas can be used, but a 15 second trek should be manageable either way.
3) Students cannot be picked up and dropped off from the parking lot to avoid the drop off line. The exception would be students on crutches, in wheelchairs, etc. If a student is dropped off from the parking lot, an adult (the person dropping the student off) must exit the vehicle and walk the student across the crosswalk.
4) The car rider line merges into ONE line once you approach the sidewalk. The left side of the lane needs to remain clear.
5) Please watch and listen for guidance from the administrator on duty. Ignoring instruction and refusing to pull all the way forward delays the line tremendously. It also results in pointless social media posts that bring forth no solution and should really be directed at the noncompliant drivers and not the school (wink, wink). Oh, and refrain from the use off of those cellular devices, please.
Lots of love, Eastside. Help us out.

Buses
You will receive notice from the district regarding the new bus routing system. Routes have been revised and placed in the new "bus finder" spreadsheet which is easily located and assessible on the district Transportation page on the BCPS website. Specific arrival times will be added once buses are able to complete the routes and gain proper estimated times. It is anticipated that no route will have more that a 10-15 minute window of time change. Most pick up and drop off time will have minimal impact.

Parents, Be Mindful of Tik Tok
Our school systems across the nation are dealing with Tik Tok challenges. Each month outlines new challenges that included theft, destruction, vandalism, inappropriate physical contact, sexual acts, and many other acts of inappropriate behavior.
Parents help us stop the TikTok madness! This is no place for your kids. If you are on the fence about this, read this information from an alarming article by the Wall Street Journal. Highlights include:
WSJ created dozens of TikTok accounts for fictional users between the ages of 13 and 15. "An analysis of the videos served to these accounts found that through its powerful algorithms, TikTok can quickly drive minors—among the biggest users of the app—into endless spools of content about sex and drugs."
"TikTok served one account registered as a 13-year-old at least 569 videos about drug use, references to cocaine and meth addiction, and promotional videos for online sales of drug products and paraphernalia. Hundreds of similar videos appeared in the feeds of the Journal’s other minor accounts."
"TikTok also showed the Journal’s teenage users more than 100 videos from accounts recommending paid pornography sites and sex shops. Thousands of others were from creators who labeled their content as for adults only."
"Still others encouraged eating disorders and glorified alcohol, including depictions of drinking and driving and of drinking games."
This app is not good for our students. If you allow the app, we encourage you to monitor activity closely. Also know that your child likely has multiple accounts: the one YOU see, and the one THEIR FRIENDS see.
Picture Retakes
Picture retakes are October 13. We do not do retakes for the entire school. To be eligible for retakes, you must have been absent on picture day, closed your eyes in the picture, or have a glare on your glasses in the image. Only students needing to retake pictures may dress down on the retake day.

Face Coverings This Year
Please review correspondence from superintendent, Dr. Bacon, sent on July 16 for a full statement regarding face coverings. To summarize, students and staff will not be required to wear face coverings when we return for the start of the 2021-22 school year. We do recommend that staff and students who are not fully vaccinated continue to wear face coverings when social distancing cannot be maintained. We also recommend that students and staff members who have a compromised immune system or other health impairments continue to wear face coverings as well.
No student or staff member will be asked if they are vaccinated when not wearing a mask as this is a personal decision that each staff member, student, and family will make on their own. No student or staff member should be harassed, belittled, or teased for wearing or not wearing a mask while on school grounds.
Upon family request, students wearing masks will be given alternate seating during lunch to maintain social distancing from peers of 6' or greater. Please be on the lookout for district communication regarding how to make this request.
No Algebra 1 This Year
Eastside will not have Algebra 1 as a course offering this year. Students may still earn Algebra 1 credit by passing the district Algebra 1 assessment. We will share specific information with students regarding how to take the test on a later date.

8th Graders Can Take HS Credit Health
Health is required by the state to complete in order to graduate. Due to our large class sizes and class load some students choose to take, we offer online health over the summer to alleviate at least one required class. This class will be done through Edgenuity. The entire class can be completed online and takes about an average of 45 hours to complete. We will have a 60 student limit, and put any additional applicants on a waiting list if others back out.
This health course is completely self-paced, and there will be no live meetings. The teacher or counselor will check in with students/ parents a few times throughout the summer if students are behind on pacing.
If a student completes this Health course over the summer, the credit will be added to their BEHS transcript. During their freshman year at BE, their Health course will be replaced with Digital Literacy, Art History, or another half-credit elective of their choice. Digital Lit and Art History are both required courses to graduate, normally taken during a student’s sophomore year. So, taking those as a freshman will free up space for another elective of choice later in high school.
Parent/Student informational meeting: We will host a Zoom Meeting at 6:30 pm on Monday, May 10 to give students and parents any information they need and to provide the opportunity to ask questions. We will send out the Zoom meeting link by email by May 5.
*Please contact Dona Hare for questions: [email protected]
Please fill out the 2021 Summer Online Health Course Application by May 4 to ensure your spot! Be on the lookout for an email from Mrs. Hare by May 5, letting you know we received the application and giving you the Zoom link to our May 10 informational meeting.
From Mr.
Apparel

6th Grade Open House

Camp Opportunities
Please click the Summer Activities tab above to see summer opportunities such as: boys and girls basketball camps, volleyball camp, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes camp, East Running Club, and more. We'll add activities there as we receive them.

Please make sure your students are practicing recommended school procedures when students in their peer group have known nut allergies. Classrooms with students having allergies have been given specific instructions not to bring nuts into the classrooms at any time.
